Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc

Classification 3ème Cru Classé

Sweet and gently milk-chocolate style. Slightly lacking any fruit identity, but very round and trying hard to please. Good length where the fruit acid shows. Rating: 91-91 L&S (Apr 2012)

The powerful, concentrated 2011 Giscours is not terribly dissimilar from their 2005. Composed of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with scents of charcoal, underbrush, forest floor, licorice, black currants and a hint of wood smoke. This rich, medium to full-bodied, dense effort should be consumed over the next 10-15 years. 2012 - 2027 Rating: 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2012)

The Giscours 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The nose is fleshy and ripe with lifted strawberry and raspberry aromas, the oak present but well integrated. It has a pleasing purity for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, sensual mouthfeel. I feels just a tad worked in the winery, but I still appreciate the balance and soft silky tannins towards the finish. Very fine. Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, 2012)

There is a very lean redcurrant style to the fruit here, medicinal in style, certainly lightly styled and diffuse. It also carries some subtle greener tones, minty in character. The palate is diffuse, lacking in concentration, showing quite a lean style in terms of substance, with smoky vegetal tones reflecting ripeness issues and an oily texture. Disappointing. Rating: 12-13 Chris Kissack, 2012)

Deepest crimson. Fragrant with cherries and a hint of violets. Rich and soft and very rounded but perhaps a little short on acidity, surprisingly. Easy going, lacks a bit of edge and energy. 2016-2027 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, 2012)

Fine blackcurrant Cabernet fruit, good structure and aromas that flow through to the palate, an elegantly expressive wine. Drink 2015-2025. Rating: 17 2012)

This has nice ripeness, with cassis and blackberry paste flavors allied to sweet tobacco and roasted spice. Has a plump, weighty feel, but good focus, too. Rating: 89-92 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator(Apr 2012)

Rating: 89 Tim Atkin MW, 2012)

This is very precise and pure with very fine tannins and a lovely currant and light citrus undertone. Balanced and very pretty. Long finish. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, 2012)

Château Giscours

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 Château Giscours has had many owners over the years since Pierre de Lhomme bought "Guyscoutz" in 1552 and laid out an estate and vineyards. The present château was built in 1847 by Count de Pescatore. Like many Bordelais estates, Giscours was in poor condition after World War II, but its fortunes were rescued by Nicolas Tari who bought the property in 1954 and set about restoring and enlarging Giscours. In 1995, Giscours' business activities were purchased by Eric Albada Jelgersma, the owner of near-by Château du Tertre. The 83ha of vineyard are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 15 to 18 months in wood (50% new). Château Giscours is home to the Bordeaux Giscours Cricket Club - the national champions!
