The nose here is deeper, darker and more indulgent that the Rosso. The great weight of fruit here is more savoury and evolved with mint, meat, spice and then there's damson, a perky cherry-skin zip adds lift and energy. Palate quite tight, rich acid core, fruit is wound in but there, then more spice, woodland fruits too. There's a nicely structured backbone and good power and drive. This is elegant, fresh cigar notes and wood spice. Meaty too and there is that soft licorice once more. Good length - impressive stuff. L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is starting to show its maturity as earth tones and hints of dark chocolate give way to plum sauce and grilled herbs. It's silky smooth, nearly fleshy in feel, with cool-toned acidity to balance ripe red and black fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. The 2012 maintains energy yet shows a bit of heat toward the close, finishing long and gently tannic with a sour citrus tinge that leaves the mouth watering. I would err on the side of caution and drink my bottles sooner than later. That said, there's a lot of pleasure to be found here. Low-key but well-balanced nose. Edgy and very vibrant. Very obviously Sangiovese. Still quite youthful. Quite a lot of tannin but zesty, clean, ripe tannin rather than dried-fruit quality. Youthful but promising. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 17+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2020)
Carlo Ferrini has now put three vintages of Giodo under his belt. This is the consulting enologist's personal property in Montalcino. Carlo felt the need to stretch his creative muscles and this avowed “Sangiovesista” set his sights on Montalcino. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is not as dense or rich as the two previous vintages released. This wine offers a subdued and streamlined personality that pegs it closer to classic Sangiovese without the exuberance - and irresistible controversy - that we can expect from this talented Tuscan winemaker. In fact, the wine shows little of Carlo's personal style that prizes density, opulence and concentration. Wild berry, pressed violets and spice rise from the bouquet. The wine is firm, delineated, muscular and powerful in terms of textural finesse. I feel confident of its aging potential. The mouthfeel will flesh out further with more time in the bottle. That said, I admit to feeling nostalgic for the grandeur and opulence that I associate with Carlo's vast portfolio of great wines. Go for it Carlo! Show us your stuff. This is a bashful vintage that I don't associate with your signature style. Drinking range: 2018 - 2030 Rating: 94 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2017)
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza' is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.
Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico Consorzio and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all chosen for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.
The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. It was finished just in time to make the 2019 vintage. The gravity-fed vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.
