2012 Cuvelier los Andes

Grapes Petit Verdot, Syrah, Malbec, Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Argentina, Mendoza
ABV 14.5%

Although always dominated by Malbec, the blend here changes slightly each vintage. In 2012 it is made up of 64% Malbec; 11% Merlot; 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; 6% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot 60% of which is aged for a year in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new. Thick and richly textured with voluminous fruit yet very drinkable and cool on the finish. The touch of the Cuveliers (owners of Léoville Poyferré) is there in the elegance and supple dryness. Drinking range: 2014 - 2021 Rating: 91 L&S (Mar 2016)

*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.

Cuvelier los Andes

The Cuvelier family were selling wines to the good folk of Northern France in the early years on the nineteenth Century. In 1903, with the purchase of the St Estèphe estate of Château le Crock, they moved into château ownership, crowning their move in 1920 by buying Château Leoville Poyferré. In the 1990s the family spread their wings all the way to Mendoza, initially working with Michel Rolland on his Clos de la Siete project. But, in 1999, they started to plant their own vineyards - Cuvelier los Andes - and began producing wine in 2003. Michel Rolland dutifully oversees winemaking, and spare grapes are still sold off to Clos de la Siete.

Everyone's favourite grape variety, these days, seems to be Malbec. It's easy to see why, especially as the Argentinians have crafted a bright bold and flavoursome style out of the grape variety that Bordeaux forgot. In this case you will find a brace of very typical Mendoza Malbecs, including one from master wine maker Nicolas Catena with his slightly more subtle take on pure Malbec along with his stricter more serious Malbec Cabernet blend. Straddling the continents slightly, there's a bottle of the wonderful Malbec-based blend made at the Cuvelier (of Leoville Poyferre fame) family's Mendoza estate. And whilst Bordeaux may have (mostly) cast off Malbec, it still hangs on in the Cahors region of South West France from where we have included a trio of fine examples.
