75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese 5% Cabernet Franc. Desperately youthful for now, blue-edged colour, distinctly oaky, but all the way through there's character here. Still taut, smoky on the back of the palate, this wine's distinctive very tightly-wound black fruit and density of flavour, even if this is not terribly expressive for now. Satisfying finish shows real class and excitement. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 93-94 L&S (Sept 2015)

Another intense, tightly-wound wine, the 2012 Solaia is likely to require a number of years in bottle before it is ready to drink. Graphite, smoke, plums, black cherries, rose petal and mint meld together effortlessly in the glass. Here, too, the style is all about grace and finesse. The 2012 Solaia is going require patience, but all the elements are in the right place. In 2012, the Cabernet Franc is nearly 7% of the blend, which is on the high side. Extremely impressive ripe dark fruits of blueberries, plums and blackberries follow through to a full body, round texture and bright acidity. The finesse and depth to this red is stunning making it a wonderful successor to the 2011 Solaia. Needs three or four years to soften and open. Better in 2018. The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. Throughout their long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. They are also considered producers of 'Super Tuscan' wines. Today Marchese Piero Antinori is director of the company, assisted by his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Tenuta Tignanello, with its famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards, is situated between the Greve and Pesa valleys in the heart of Chianti Classico exactly between the little villages of Monteridolfi and Santa Maria a Macerata, 30km south of Florence.
