Some evolution at the rim. Warm, ripe, berry fruit nose. Then cool and refreshing on the end. Lots of the right ingredients in here but still a coiled spring. Drinking range: 2021 - 2032 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com(Jan 2020)
Fermented in stainless steel and cement (seven days' alcoholic fermentation, 15 days maceration) and aged for 30 months in 500 and 700-litre barrels then 14 months in bottle. A bright but not particularly deep colour, more garnet than ruby, thanks to the long ageing. Beautifully expressive, developed and complex nose – a harmony of forest fruits, balsam, spice, tobacco and oak. Effortlessly elegant palate – suave, supple, dry and fresh, with the concentration lightly worn and balsam and tobaccoey spice flavours weaving in and out of subtly sweet berry fruit. Gossamer-fine texture and great length. Rating: 96 Joanna Simon, www.joannasimon.com(Jun 2019)
This is the fourth release from Carlo Ferrini's relatively new project in Brunelloville. Monitoring the evolution of this tiny estate has been particularly exciting. This celebrated winemaker is known for bigger and bolder expressions of Sangiovese. The Giodo 2013 Brunello di Montalcino, however, reflects a more reflective and inward-looking approach. Compared to other Brunellos in its class, this wine manages a very steady and calmly forthcoming collection of aromatic attributes. Instead of individual aromas, the wine brings forth a spinning whirl wheel of integrated tones that all blend into one. The bouquet is broader, wider and more all-encompassing than you usually get with the slightly nervous and skittish Sangiovese grape. The mouthfeel offers a similar level of wholeness and oneness. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 95 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com)(Feb 2018)
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
Famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini who's stellar career has seen him consulting at some of the greatest estates in Italy has finally put down some roots of his own. Putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, where through rigorous selection he has planted 15 different clones of Sangiovese, all selected for their quality of fruit and their low yields. All perfectly suited to this ideal site.
With limited production and incredible provenance, it is no surprise that these wines are in huge demand and heavily oversubscribed.
We are delighted to be the UK's importer for this very special estate - not just because of our respect for the pedigree of Carlo Ferrini - but because they are fantastic wines.
The maestro has finally put his name on the bottle and these wines are full of class and pedigree.
