CHÂTEAU HAUT BAILLY

2013 Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Château Haut Bailly

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Pessac-Léognan
Classification Cru Classé

Edgy, herby fruit, and quite an aggressive texture, this is a tad disappointing today. Very punchy tannic finish. A second tasting was very similar - the are good bits but it still feels hollow of fruit savour compared to the structural density. 2016-2025 Rating: 87 L&S (Apr 2014)

There are only 2,500 cases of the 2013 Haut-Bailly because yields were a microscopic 20 hectoliters per hectare. Made from a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this elegant effort boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a beautiful, intriguing bouquet of spring flowers, creme de cassis, plums and an underlying Graves earthiness. Layered with more texture and concentration than many of its peers, it will benefit from several years of cellaring, and should last an atypically long time of 20 years. The harvest occurred at this beautiful estate in the heart of Pessac-Leognan between October 1-10. Production was tiny, and Veronique Sanders, the brilliant winemaker, was worried about pushing for too much extraction, so vinification was intelligently done in a gentle manner in order to extract the softest tannins possible. 2014-2034 Rating: 91-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Dark purple ruby. Violet and blueberry jelly complicate aromatic herbs on the simple nose. On the palate, very fresh red and black fruit flavors show nice vibrancy but limited complexity and depth. The gentle extraction makes this seem balanced and easy to drink; should it develop more sweet, fruity flesh it will prove to be a successful Haut Bailly. Rating: 87-89 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

The nose has depth rich black fruits and the palate has lots of cassis and black cherry. There is mid structure firm tannins but there is enough rich ripe fruit to balance and fill out the back palate. There is a feel of harmony depth richness yet elegance. 2018-30 Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Château Haut Bailly

The now very reliable Pessac-Léognan estate of Haut Bailly was revived after its purchase by Belgian Daniel Sanders. He'd married into the Bordeaux wine trade in 1919, and formed a determination to buy Haut Bailly after tasting their awesome 1945. There was much work to do upon buying the estate, some of the vines were still ungrafted for instance, and the renovation was still not complete by the time Daniel's son took over in 1979. Véronique Sanders represents the latest generation to run the estate, albeit under the benign ownership of American Robert Wilmers who bought Haut Bailly in 1998 bringing more much needed investment, the fruits of which can be seen in the high quality of today's wines. The vineyards are planted to a fairly typical "Left Bank" mix of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.
