From Helene Garcin (who does a fabulous job with all her family’s estates), this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot exhibits a Graves-like bouquet of scorched earth, charcoal embers, red and black currants, loamy soil and tobacco leaf. With good ripeness, decent acidity and sweet tannin, it is not as big and rich as some top vintages have been, but it is a charming red to enjoy over the next 6-8 years. 2014-2022 Rating: 86-88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com(Aug 2014)

Blackcurrant leaf, bitter chocolate, dark-fruit character. Pretty compact and intense, but with great balance and much more weight on the palate than most. Impressively done. A rare 2013 candidate for cellaring. Lovely clarity of flavour. (RH) Drink 2018-2033. Rating: 17.5 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com(Apr 2014)

Dense colour, slightly herbaceous nose, fruit should overcome the 2013 greenness. Drink: 2017-2023. Rating: 15.75 Steven Spurrier(Apr 2014)

A lightly dusty frame surrounds the plum, raspberry coulis and bitter cherry notes, with a relatively racy finish. A hint of singed wood pinches this just a bit. Rating: 87–90 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator(Apr 2014)

The Château Haut-Bergey 2013 is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. It has a well-defined, brisk bouquet that certainly has more vigour than the second wine this year. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dense black fruit on the entry but lightening up towards the linear finish. Conservative compared to recent vintages but it should give pleasure 6 to 8 years after bottling. Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com(Apr 2014)
