2013 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification 1er Grand Cru Classé
ABV 13%

Quite lifted, scented fruit on the nose and palate. It's not a heavyweight, but they have not overcooked it. Pretty definition slowly tightens up but the fruit stays well. A success. Rating: 91+ L&S (Apr 2014)

There's ripe cherry fruit on the nose, which is oaky and quite stylish. Medium-bodied, this is textured and elegant rather than structured, though there are some tannins on the finish, which is quite long. Drinking range: 2016 - 2022 Rating: 88 Stephen Brook, 2016)

One can sense the chalky limestone soil base of much of the Clos Fourtet vineyard (adjacent to the walls of this medieval showcase town). The dense ruby/plum-colored 2013 offers sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, good minerality, slightly angular acids (a characteristic of many 2013s), and ripe tannins. It should turn out to be very good, but it is clearly not one of the great Clos Fourtets made over the last decade or more. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. 2014-2026 Rating: 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2014)

Good deep ruby. Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, minerals and truffle. Sweet, dense and seamless, with rich, dense, multilayered flavors of red fruits, minerals and flowers. Finishes with suave tannins and an aromatic leafy note. Excellent potential here. Rating: 89-92 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website(May 2014)

The nose has a nice depth of fruit and although black fruited on the palate is feels quite fresh. Mid sweetness with a nice mix of black and red fruits and it fills out with some sweet fruit on the finish. 2017-2026. Rating: 90-94 Derek Smedley MW, 2014)

I tasted this wine twice during en primeur week and it shone on both occasions. Clay limestone soils and the presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend have both contributed to its impressive structure. Scented, balanced and stylishly oaked with acidity that drives the wine onwards to the finish. 2020-28 Rating: 94 Tim Atkin MW, 2014)

Attractive, meaty nose and quite nice balance, but the finish is short and compact. Admittedly it is accurate and while not flashy this is a nice mid-term wine with a dusty, old style cola and cassis theme. Rating: 16.5+ Matthew Jukes 2014)

Subtle but insistent floral perfume. Clove and oak spice on the palate. Chewy tannins – this is one of the few right bank 2013s that really needs age to soften the structure. Slightly mousy finish. I’m not convinced this is destined for greatness. (RH) Drink 2018-2023. Rating: 16 Richard Hemming MW - 2014)

Fresh but restrained nose. Pretty texture and tannins. Limestone terroir freshness. Firm, long finish. Drink: 2020-2030. Rating: 17.25 James Lawther MW, 2014)

Long and racy, with lovely persistence to the chalky minerality and bright, unadorned cassis, damson plum and raspberry fruit flavors. Shows a lovely echo of rooibos tea at the very end. Rating: 90–93 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator(Apr 2014)

The Clos Fourtet has a well-defined, mineral driven bouquet that is reserved at first, but unfolds in the glass - always a good sign at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, tensile tannins with a punchy finish. This is one of the better Saint Emilion wines in 2013, no doubt. Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, 2014)
