A dense, explosive Champagne, the 2013 Cristal is a picture-perfect example of the year. Ripe pear, tangerine oil, white flowers and crushed rocks are all beautifully amplified. There is an exotic quality to the 2013 that simply can’t be denied. Drinking range: 2024 - 2053 Rating: 98 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2025)

It’s linear and extremely long, showing real energy and vibe with crushed chalk and stone. Medium-bodied, tight and still structured, with phenolic tension and intensity. Fresh finish. Demonstrates the reserve power of Crystal. Drink or hold. Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2025)
(this has the usual 60% pinot/40% chardonnay blend with 32% vinified in wood and no malolactic; 8 g/l dosage). I’m completely sold on the 2013 Champagne vintage and this wine only strengthens my conviction about it as it’s lovely and the late harvest (October), which is as rare in Champagne as it has become in Burgundy, can be ‘seen’ in the bright acidity that is firm and crisp but not unduly drying or austere. Moreover, the yeasty nose, even with an interesting sourdough character, avoids the vaguely exotic character that some ‘13s can display. The palate impression is harmonious while blending elegance with raciness as the dense but almost delicate mousse is the perfect offset to the more prominent acid spine shaping the clean and dry finish. I also find the moderately high 8 g/l dosage to pair well with the bright acidity whereas, for example, I find that the same dosage works less well with the 2009 vintage. For my taste, while this could be enjoyed now, it’s still on the younger side and I would be inclined to cellar it for another 3 to 5 years first. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2024)
Exotic hints of tangerine and candied ginger are an enticing entrance for this vivid Champagne, accenting a finely meshed range of ripe green apple and cassis fruit, with rich notes of chopped almond, brioche and lemon curd. An underscoring streak of salinity gains momentum through the mouthwatering finish, echoing as it rides the plushly creamy mousse. This is decadence in a sleek and graceful package. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drinking range: 2021 - 2033 Rating: 96 Alison Napjus, The Wine Spectator (Sept 2021)
Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer is one of the largest remaining independent Champagne Houses, owned by the same family since it was founded in 1776. The house firmly established its reputation through its guiding principles: great wine depends on the quality of the soil. A passion for tradition, and an astute vision of the future.
Louis Roederer lays claim to 250 hectares to call their own (a rarity among the Grand Marque Houses) which has been cultivated organically and Biodynamically since 2000. Through these sustainable farming practices, Louis Roederer have a greater understanding about how champagne may be made to deal with ecological concerns, consumer taste and climate change. These vineyards are located in three classic Champagne districts: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and the Côte des Blancs. The diversity of these sites provides the House with an extensive and rich palette to fashion the wines from.
In 1876, Nicholas II of Russia requested Louis Roederer to reserve the house's best cuvée just for him in a crystal bottle, leading to the now famous 'Cristal', the very first Cuvée de Prestige. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir produced only in the best years, with long cellar aging.
At the centre of Louis Roederer is Collection. A multi-vintage blend of wines from selected vineyard plots in the Cœur de Terroir (the heart of the terroir). Each Collection's number represents the number of blends since the birth of the Louis Roederer Champagne House. Working with lower yields and riper fruit, the dosage is lower to balance the wines after long cellar aging, producing finer bubbles and a creamy, yet dry texture.
