Vineyard Les Naugues

The Naugues is the 'Monsieur de la Cave' says Francois and you can immeditaly sense the swagger and the impressive weight to the wine. The 1er Cru Naugues vineyard gives smaller grapes which are highly concentrated. This is tightly wound now but dramatic and clearly full of potential. Long and intense with delicate violets, deep dark cherry and lovely woodspice - great wine but this will need a moment to be at its best. L&S (Dec 2014)

(from vines planted in 1972 and raised in ~60% new oak). Here too there is just enough reduction present to make it worth decanting though it’s still possible to appreciate the earthy black fruit-suffused nose. Otherwise there is excellent density to the broad-shouldered medium-bodied flavors that are supported by a moderately prominent tannic spine that is firm but not hard on the wonderfully complex and persistent finale. As is usually the case with this wine, it is the best in the range but I would suggest buying it only if you have the patience to allow it at least 4 to 5 years of cellar time first. 2021+ Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2015)

Splendid, rich, concentrated fruit. Abundant and harmonious. A fine, classy wine. (Coates' 14 favourites from 2013, Decanter Magazine). Drinking range: 2018 - 2027 Rating: 92 Clive Coates MW (Jul 2015)

Domaine François Raquillet

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1990, with his wife Emmanuelle. Records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s, and Francois is the eleventh generation.

With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels (up to 50% new wood for the Premiers Crus) and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. François explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style - combined with good mid-palate weight.
