The 2013 Opus One is a powerful, dense wine. A blast of dark-fleshed fruit, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice races across the palate. The 2013 still possesses notable textural depth. The aromatics are a bit open and also suggestive of a wine that has entered its first plateau of maturity. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2025)

The 2013 Opus One impresses with its mid-palate density, power and richness. It's also a drop-dead gorgeous beauty that is starting to drink well now that the bouquet has opened and some of the tannic heft has melted away. There's still plenty of power and structure, but all the elements are so nicely balanced. All that said, Opus One is one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, as it so often is. Drinking range: 2023 - 2043 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)
The 2013 is a powerhouse. Dense, heady and massively structured, the 2013 is impossibly young. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of intense dark red fruit in this potent, brooding wine. Graphite, smoke, cedar and tobacco run through this virile, statuesque wine. The wine's sheer youthful intensity is truly remarkable. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle before age ten, and even that may not be enough. The 2013 Opus One is shaping up to be an iconic wine. Drinking range: 2023 - 2043 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2018)
The 2013 Opus One, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, is a beauty. Velvety textured, without a had edge to be found, notes of cr猫me de cassis, blueberry, subtle wood and floral notes gently rise from the wine鈥檚 dense purple color. Beautifully full-bodied and extraordinarily elegant and pure, this is certainly one of their great achievements over the last 37 years. The wine has an exquisite finish and can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years. Drinking range: 2016 - 2046 Rating: 97+ Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Dec 2016)
Opus One
Opus One winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Ch芒teau Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The 1979 and 1980 vintages were simultaneously unveiled in 1984 as Opus One's first release. Opus One then became known as America's first ultra-premium wine. In 1982 Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild began label design. The partners agreed to choose a name of Latin origin for the joint venture, allowing for easy recognition in both English and French. Baron Philippe announced his choice, "Opus," a musical expression denoting the first masterwork of a composer. Two days later he proposed an additional word: "Opus One". The vineyard consists of 69 hectares planted closely around the winery on the St Helena Highway, in the Oakville sub-region, at a density of 6310 vines per hectare. The wine is vinified in stainless steel, and aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months, and then another 18 months in bottle before release - at 3 years after the harvest.
