Bright, deep red. Red cherry, sweet spices and smoky oak on the enticing nose. Strong soil tones complement musky spice, sweet pipe tobacco, and red fruit flavors. Finishes creamy, tactile and long, with polished tannins. Made from Sangiovese grown in vineyards located in all four of the major quadrants of the Montalcino production zone, which allowed owner Adon Bucci to make a highly balanced wine. The very varied terroir of Montalcino does not allow great generalisations, but we can certainly consider the warm and sunny area of Sant'Angelo in Colle less penalised than others in such bizarre years as 2014. This is a tiny seven hectare estate in San Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Marcello Bucci, who studied oenology under Signora Fuligni (Roberto Fuligni's aunt), is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.
A new winery finished in time for the harvest in 2015 has given Marcello greater control and flexibility with the wine-making - this is an estate going from strength to strength The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper, perhaps than, say, Fuligni or Padelletti, but what they lack in finesse is more than compensated for in the indulgent joy they give, not to mention the pricing, making Collemattoni one of the best value wines of the region.
