CHÂTEAU CAPBERN

2014 Saint Estèphe

Grapes Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe

A change of name this year, dropping the Gasqueton - all part of the new owners, updating and modernising of the wines in this stable. Sad it seems - but we shall no doubt get used to it.. The wine is, however, great still. Nice rich fruit. Dark and almost choclatey feel, but no thickness. Well poised with a little dusty grip and delicious long push. Broadish for St Estephe, but still with that lovely, tell-tale, lift and straight line. Recommended. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 Capbern has a wonderful bouquet, very well-defined with blackberry, bilberry and cedar aromas; focused and vivacious. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite approachable in style with a caressing raspberry and crushed strawberry finish. This is very fine and let’s face it: a bloody good value. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com(Mar 2018)

Very dark crimson. Very suave and sophisticated nose. Very juicy fruit and vibrant. Great attack and even a little hint of hot mustard on the palate! Not heavy. Great vitality. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com(Feb 2018)

The 2014 Capbern is bold, ripe and quite juicy. Although not especially subtle, the 2014 possesses striking aromatic nuance, power and intensity. Dried cherry, licorice, herbs, tobacco and mint add attractive aromatic topnotes, but it is the wine’s juiciness that stands out most. This is a strong showing. The 2014 offers plenty of near- and medium-term appeal, but also has enough structure to drink well for at least a number of years. Drinking range: 2017 - 2024 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com(Feb 2017)
