CHÂTEAU FOMBRAUGE

2014 Grand Cru Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé
ABV 14%

A decidedly exuberant wine, the 2014 Fombrauge hits the palate with tons of depth and richness. Here the flavors are dark, bold and incisive. Blackberry jam, cloves, graphite, new leather, lavender, menthol and cedar wrap around the succulent, racy finish. All the elements are very much in balance. Readers who enjoy ripe, voluptuous wines will find much to admire. The 2014 will need time to fully absorb the new oak, but it appears to have the depth to be able to do that. Tasted two times. Rating: 89-92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

The Château Fombrauge 2014, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked between 2 and 20 October, has a rich and rather alcoholic bouquet that feels smudged compared to its peers. The palate is sweet and chewy on the entry, powerful and burly with immense weight on the middle and finish. It is redeemed by a decent line of acidity that prevents any cloyingness on the finish, but I would like to see more character and personality in this Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé. Tasted three times with consistent notes. Drinking range: 2019 - 2032 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

Densely packed fruit with fragrance and lift. Broad and rather chunky now – firm flavours with a touch of iron that bodes well for the future. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 16.75 Steven Spurrier (Apr 2015)

Rich, ripe and modern. Plush fruit. Polished tannins and texture. Firm, dry, tight-knit finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 87 James Lawther MW, decanter.com (Apr 2015)

Château Fombrauge

Chateau Fombrauge is the largest St. Emilion vineyard with over 128 acres. The Bordeaux wine vineyard is planted to 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 30 years of age and are planted to a density of 5,600 vines per hectare. Owned by Bernard Magrez and consulted by Michel Rolland, this Right Bank property strives to produce the best Bordeaux wine possible. Cold macerations, 4-5 week fermentations in small wood vats are some of the techniques employed by the property. Close to 14,000 cases are produced in most vintages. The estate has a second wine, Le Cadran de Fombrauge which produces over 100,000 bottles of this Bordeaux wine per year.
