CHÂTEAU GLORIA

2014 Cru Bourgeois Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification Cru Bourgeois
ABV 14%

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, & 6% Petit Verdot. Fabulous. From the start there is good, deep, dark shiny fruit. Intensity of fruit extract is great. No spare fat here, just lovely polished dark spicy berries and semi-dried dates, a touch of fruitcake, but chewy and lithe too. Recommended. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 vintage is delivering right now across the halo appellations of St Estèphe, Pauillac, and St Julien, and this displays precise architecture and well held together, chewy tannins. Black fruit, supple leather notes, chalk, cassis, slate, full of character, shoulders to the tannins, still young. One to look out for. 40% new oak, September 25 to October 10 for the harvest, maximising a glorious Indian summer. Remi di Constanzo technical director. Drinking range: 2024 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2023)

The 2014 Gloria has a ripe and voluminous bouquet with plenty of blackberry, raspberry, pencil box and cedar aromas all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and poised with very well integrated new oak. There is plenty of freshness here, a 2014 Saint Julien full of energy with a persistent graphite finish that is very satisfying. Like its sibling, the Saint-Pierre, there is great potential here. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)

Pale crimson. Rather dull on the nose and a bit salty and edgy on the palate. Austere fruitless finish. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 15.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Château Gloria

Château Gloria is an unclassified St-Julien property that produces clarets that equal in quality those from the more prestigious classed growths. Henri Martin, a cooper by upbringing, took over the property in 1942 and began purchasing plots of vineyards from classed growth properties such as Gruaud-Larose, Talbot, Lagrange and Léoville-Barton. By the mid 1960s he had 50 hectares spread across the appellation. In 1982 he purchased Château St-Pierre and thus realised his lifetime ambition of owning a Grand Cru Classé property. Henri Martin died in 1991 and Gloria is now run by his son-in-law Jean-Louis Triaud. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is aged in a combination of large oak foudres and small oak barrels (50% new). Gloria produces a wine that is typically deep in colour and rich, cassis-laden and cedary on the palate. It normally needs 7-10 years of bottle age to show at its best.
