CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE

2014 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

78% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc. This is the highest proportion of Cab Franc that they have put in for more than 20 years, simply because it is so good this year. The result is fantastic. There is a lovely freshness, a herbal, eucalyptus note which adds a piquancy to the lovely deep, purple fruit. There is a lovely gently gripping suedey feel here, an almost chalky, dusty minerality - but the plump fruit sits perfectly in this frame. Aromatic and joyous Pomerol. Sadly this is Jean-Michel Laporte's last vintage here, and he has made the wine, but someone else will 'finish' over the next 2 years - we hope they can preserve the super effort so far. Rating: 94 L&S (Mar 2015)

Softening and opening up at 7 years old, although still in primary fruit territory. Supple gourmet texture, rich and supple with shots of butterscotch, blueberry and raspberry. Plenty of tannic pressure on the finish, great quality, plenty of Pomerol character. The finish combines salinity and sweetness, real push and pull. 75% new oak, 25% one year old barrels. Last vintage under Jean-Michel Laporte, just 400 bottles left at the estate. 38hl/h yield, harvest September 23 to October 6. Drinking range: 2024 - 2046 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2021)

The 2014 La Conseillante has a very refined bouquet with expressive redcurrant, cranberry, rose petal and orange rind aromas that are very well defined. This seems to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin that belies the structure underneath. There is still some new oak to be subsumed although it is totally in sync with the fruit, allowing the precision and detail to shine on the sophisticated finish. This is a strong showing for La Conseillante in a more challenging growing season that did not favour Pomerol as much as in 2015. Tasted at La Conseillante vertical at the property. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

The 2014 La Conseillante is a pretty wine, but it is also a bit light in the context of the vintage. Sweet floral notes, exotic spice and bright red-toned fruit are nicely pushed forward. As always, La Conseillante is one of the most delicate and elegant of Pomerols. Still, tasting the 2014 and 2013 side by side reveals a relatively small difference between the vintages, and certainly a smaller difference than most of the neighboring properties. Whether that is a function of the land or the result of winemaking decisions is the kind of question that will provide fascination for many years. Even so, this should age nicely. Drinking range: 2020 - 2039 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

Château La Conseillante

Château la Conseillante’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the part that became Château l’Evangile whilst Catherine Conseillan took the other. In 1871 Château la Conseillante was bought by the Nicolas family who own it to this day. With only the addition of a small plot of vines in 2014, the estate has remained the same ever since. The 12ha of vineyard are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards border Petrus to the north, and one can gaze across l’Evangile and see the vines of Château Cheval Blanc. Indeed, a small part of la Conseillante’s vineyard strays across into St Emilion, but is included in the main Pomerol cuvée. Château la Conseillante is a well-executed balancing act marrying tradition with modernity, something exemplified by the new cellar that opened in 2012.
