CHÂTEAU LAFITE
2015 1er Cru Classé Pauillac
Dense and dryer yet than the Carruades, a touch of coal as well as classic pencil-lead. Sample shows what seems to be a lot of high-toast oak, which would be surprising here. Calm in the mouth, it is just shy of real excitement at the moment. Attractive but not very powerful finish. Rating: 93-94 L&S (Apr 2016)
* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.
The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is slightly higher in tone than the Mouton-Rothschild on the nose, with scents of blackberry, iodine, cedar and crushed violet emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and harmonious, with plush tannins, a keen line of acidity, impressive grip and precision on the finish. This has gained complexity in recent years, hence my slightly higher score. Tasted at the 2015 Ten-Year-On tasting at Bordeaux Index and blind at Farr Vintners with consistent notes. Drinking range: 2026 - 2052 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2025)
The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is more opulent and generous on the nose than its peers, offering layers of black fruit infused with cassis, graphite, Earl Grey tea and discreet menthol scents, all delivered with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. There is a sweet core of fruit to this quite high-toned, almost iodine-y 2015 that just lacks a bit of detail on the finish. This clearly has some way to go. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting. Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2019)
Lead and graphite are complimented by notes of blueberries and blackberries. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied and focused with very round and polished tannins. Elegance with power. Very classic nature for Lafite. Drinking range: 2022 - Rating: 99 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2018)
Rich, powerful and enveloping, the 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is endowed with serious volume and textural resonance. Super-ripe plum, smoke and spice notes emerge in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Although the aromatics aren't giving much at this point, the palate is much more expressive. The wine's sheer power and authoritative tone result in an unusually dramatic Lafite. The 2015 is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot that spent 20 months in oak, which is a bit more than the norm. Drinking range: 2025 - 2055 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2018)
A wine that has divided opinions in 2015. What some people see as greenness, I regard as freshness and balance. This is elegant and harmonious, but doesn’t lack stuffing, carrying its 100% new oak with ease. Graphite, blackcurrant and cedar wood are underpinned by chalky minerality. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 97 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2016)
A very Cabernet-dominated feel to this wine, with the assemblage comprising 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and just 9% Merlot. A simply huge leap up from the second wine aromatically, with lightly roasted cherry fruits, and scents of violets and rose petals, laced with liquorice, finely framed by pencil-shavings, graphite and tobacco leaf. The palate is poised, pure, showing direction, but it maintains the silky elegance also found in the second wine. Very direct, with hidden tension here though, the finely poised floral fruits intertwined with a taut frame of ripe tannins and fresh acids. Very straight, linear but a remarkably perfumed, elegant, feminine style of fruit. A long grip of ripe, lightly grained savoury tannins. Quite haunting in a way, but also muted in the context of the vintage, and when examined in the light of other recent vintages of Lafite. Rating: 16.5-17.5/20 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2016)
91% Cabernet Sauvignon picked 23 September to 6 October; 9% Merlot picked 17-23 September. Lustrous mid crimson. Lightly spicy nose and very smooth tannins in the Lafite style. Only just enough acidity. Blurry impression. Mild and charming - very restrained and Lafite. It builds on the end in an impressive manner. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2016)
The Lafite violets come to the fore, providing finely polished elegance to the palate. It seems discreet but the cellar master says 2015 is the most ‘concentrated’ Lafite they have made. This will show as it matures. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 96 Steven Spurrier (Apr 2016)
The 2015 Lafite-Rothschild is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot picked between 17 September and 6 October. Matured in 100% new oak, it has a tightly-wound bouquet with black cherries, cassis, cedar and graphite, though it does not quite possess the depth one would have expected the vintage would have bestowed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, harmonious on the entry and with the oak neatly integrated. There is a very fine grip towards the finish, which has a tangible spicy edge - white pepper with a touch of bay leaf and enough pencil lead to fill a stationery set. The aftertaste is extremely long here, more than a minute when I timed it on my watch. It is an excellent Lafite-Rothschild in the making and it often "finds its voice" only after bottling, so it could ultimately end with a higher score. Drinking range: 2028 - 2060 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2016)
A dramatic, ample Lafite, the 2015 is also arrestingly beautiful and vivid. Expressive floral notes give the dark red and black flavors gorgeous aromatic lift. Today, the new oak is a bit pronounced, but otherwise, this is an exceptional wine. Rose petal, lavender, mint and purplish stone fruits add the last shades of detail. Rating: 94-97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2016)
Here is a Lafite with lots of muscle and tone. Very tannic and velvety textured. Full body, fresh acidity and a bright finish. Shows a tenderness at the end. Gorgeous. Rating: 97-98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2016)
Château Lafite
1855 classification - Premier Grand Cru Classé The long history of Château Lafite includes a period in the 17th and 18th century when it was owned by the Ségur family, who also at the time owned Latour and who's name lives on at Calon-Ségur and Phelan-Ségur. By the time of the 1855 classification which rightly recognised the reputation of Lafite, the estate was under a complicated ownership arrangement which inevitably unravelled, and Lafite was sold to Baron James de Rothschild, largely it would seem to keep uo with his cousin Nathaniel Rothschild who had recently purchased Brane-Mouton (later to become Mouton Rothschild). He died a couple of months later, but his descendents own the estate to this day. Baron Eric, who took control during the 1970's, returned Lafite to its rightful place at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy with a programme of investment, improvement and modernisation. There are 103ha of land under vine at Lafite, facing Cos d'Estournel across the Jalle du Breuil which marks the border between Pauillac and Saint Estèphe. Indeed, Lafite own a small parcel of vines over the border in Saint Estèphe. Just over 70% is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon with 25% Merlot and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vines for the grand vin average around 40 years old with none less than 10. Wines are aged in barrels from their own cooperage for aound 18 months. The second wine is Carruades de Lafite which usually features a higher proportion of Merlot in the cuvée.

Practical notes - how it works
We start a sale in each customer's name and add all their primeur orders to one sale which is invoiced at the end of the campaign (or when the customer wishes) for immediate payment. We and our customers find that having a single invoice for the vintage is the simpler option, but do please note that confirmed orders are still binding as above even if the final invoice has not been issued.
When the wine is shipped, unless previously specified we will assume that delivery is to be to bonded storage with Elephant Storage, but in any case, we will contact you requesting any alternative instructions. If you have another bonded delivery address you would like the wine to go to, please tell us at the time of ordering. If the wines are required duty-paid we will issue invoices at the rates prevailing at the time for the excise duty (currently £25.98 per case) and the VAT (currently at 20%) on the total of the wine cost and the duty.
Half-bottles, Magnums and larger bottles.
One of the additional advantages of buying en primeur is being able to order the wine in the bottle size you want. Even if a wine is only listed in one size, you can order any bottle or case size you want if the property supplies it, but you must order the case/bottle size you require and check that the correct size has been invoiced.
Additional charges are as follows:-
- +£15 per case of 24 half-bottles
- +£15 per case of 6 Magnums (2 bottles equivalent, 1.5 litres each)
- +£35 per individually boxed Double Magnum (4 bottles equivalent, 3 litres)
- +£45 per individually boxed Imperial (8 bottles equivalent, 6 litres) for Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars and Melchiors please enquire for availability and price.
