CHÂTEAU LE BOSCQ

2015 Cru Bourgeois Saint Estèphe

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
Classification Cru Bourgeois

Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Le Boscq offers plenty of blackberry, raspberry and briary scents on the nose, the oak neatly integrated, backward but simply biding its time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite structured but nicely focused with impressive tension on the finish. I would just like a little more on the aftertaste but otherwise, this is a very fine Le Boscq that punches above my expectations from barrel. Tasted September 2017. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2017)

Very dark purple. Beautifully attractive 'mineral' scents. Very direct and very St-Estèphe. Masses of ripe fruit on the palate. A good emissary. GV? Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2016)

Rating: 89 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2016)

The 2015 Le Boscq is a tasty entry-level offering. A host of blue/purplish fruits, smoke, licorice and lavender flesh out in this hearty, straightforward Cru Bourgeois. Rating: 86-88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2016)

Château Le Boscq

Château le Boscq sits at the far northern end of Saint Estèphe with it’s fine late 19th Century mansion commanding fine views over the River Gironde, and the southern portions of the vineyard gazing across the Chenal de Calon at Calon-Ségur. Unusually for this part of the Haut-Médoc, the majority of Le Boscq’s vineyard – 60% - is planted with Merlot which accounts for a rounder fleshier style to the wine.

Of note, historically, is that the Barton family owned Château le Boscq before they moved south to Léoville and Langoa in Saint Julien. Since 1995, le Boscq has been in the ownership of Bordeaux négociant and merchant Dourthe.

It was classified ‘Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel’, in the 2020 Cru Bourgeois Classification for Médoc wines. The property has already been awarded HVE level 3 (High Environmental Value), and is working toward organic certification.
