2015 Côtes de Castillon

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Côtes de Castillon

75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir has really asserted itself here. You can really feel the limestone in this, it is less round and 'on the fruit' than the others, (Saintayme / Chenade / Cruzelles) and more about the ground, the limestone, the stricter structure, tighter fruit in the fine chalky tannins and firmer, more concentrated length. Great stuff. Rating: 91-92 L&S (Apr 2016)

There’s only 5% Cabernet Sauvignon in Denis Durantou’s wine, but it’s remarkable what it brings to the blend. Violet-perfumed, with plum, cassis and blackcurrant leaf complemented by stylish oak and a chalky, minerally freshness. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, (May 2016)

The 2015 Montlandrie is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked between September 29 and October 8, and matured in 45% new oak. This is perhaps more precocious on the nose compared to Denis Durantou's La Chenade and Les Cruzelles 2015s, gradually revealing an attractive floral, dried rose petal/pot pourri scent as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite grippy in the mouth, the acidity nicely judged here and again, very harmonious and sensual on the finish. You could almost whisk this out of barrel and drink this now, but preferably, give it 4-5 years in bottle. Drinking range: 2019 - 2032 Rating: 90-93 Neal Martin, (Apr 2016)

Denis Durantou. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 45% new oak. Dark healthy crimson. Sweet and open on the nose - charming even without great concentration. Very sweet start with marked acidity. Not, unlike some Castillons, like a St-Émilion. But competently made. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - (Apr 2016)

Château Montlandrie

Among the brightest stars of the exalted Pomerol appellation is Denis Durantou at Château l’Eglise-Clinet. A little further south-east, across the boundary in the Côtes de Castillon is Château Montlandrie that Denis bought in 2009. Much renovation has taken place at the 12ha vineyard that includes, almost uniquely for the Right Bank, new plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon that now make up 15% of the vineyard alongside the usual 65% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
