The 2015 Pouilly Fuisse les Crays Vieilles Vignes comes from shallower soils than La Verchere and tends to have a slightly warmer micro-climate. One-third of the vines are 50 years old, and, because of replanting, the remainder are 15 and eight years old. It has one of the most complex and enticing bouquet from Barraud this year: very complex with citrus fruit, honeysuckle and jasmine aromas billowing from the glass. The palate is very well balanced with superb acidity and mineralité, tension struck through this wine from start to finish, leading to an exceedingly precise and persistent finish. (from 60+ year old vines located in Vergisson). A cooler and admirably pure nose exhibits notes of essence of pear, acacia blossom and citrus zest. There is ample volume to the extremely rich and full-bodied flavors that possess a succulent mouth feel thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that also serve to buffer the moderately firm acid spine on the powerful finish where once again a hint of bitter lemon appears. 2019+ Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com(Dec 2016)
(from very steep, south-facing vines close to the mother rock; the average vine age here is 25 years as the Barrauds pulled up the very old vines in 2005; aged in 20% new oak): Pale, bright yellow. The calcaire-driven aromas are ripe, sexy and inviting--in fact almost exotic--with a strong note of candied orange zest. Silky, thick and sweet, with the soft citrus and brioche flavors framed by perfectly integrated acidity. I could drink this sample right now and pretend it's a finished wine! Delicious already but will gain in nuance. At once thick and bright on the very long finish. Domaine Daniel Barraud
Daniel and Martine Barraud, now joined by their son Julien, have vineyards in Vergisson that are mostly high up under the famous rock (Vergisson lies between the two dramatic cliffs of the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson). The vineyards here are significantly higher than those of Fuissé, and are consequently later-ripening, and the wines often have a more solid structure - but all of Daniel's wines have their own character, from the Puligny-like directness of the La Roche to the fat richness of the 'en Buland', via the mineral force of the Crays.
All the wines are made keeping close to the tenets of bio-dynamics - not as Daniel says for the sake of it - but because over the generations experience has taught them these principles really are the best way forward - as such they only ever bottle on a waning moon, All the wines see some barrel ageing apart from the Chaintré, which is aged in foudre (2/3) and tank.
As Allen Meadows wrote in 2014 in Burghound "I have said this before, but I will say it again: no one makes better wine in the Mâconnais than Barraud. There are a few domaines that produce wines that are sometimes just as good, ... but none of them surpasses the quality he consistently produces.
