Beaumont is one of those wines which in the past has sometimes been a tad uninspiring, but it's nearly always solid quality and value. In the top-notch 2016 vintage this wine is now really singing - proper claret at a great price for a mature wine with easy drinkability and enough stuffing and class to be satisfying to even the most demanding palates. Drinking range: 2021 - 2028 L&S (Oct 2024)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

I chose one of the least expensive reds on the list, even though the 2016 Beaumont came in at £60 per bottle. But what I got is a fine example of a great vintage, one where you don’t need to travel to the top of the hierarchy to find delicious wine. Lavished with black fruit, tobacco and a light tang of seaweed on the nose, this has youthful zest but equal class and composure. That translates onto the palate: a quintessential Haut-Médoc that’s just beginning to drink well, pliant tannins with a caressing, quite pure blackberry and cedar finish. No complaints here. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2024)

A classy cru bourgeois from Cussac, just south of St-Julien. With virtually equal shares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, spiced up with 3% Petit Verdot, this is a suave Haut-Médoc with bramble fruit and classic, cool Bordeaux tannins, while retaining the generosity and balance of the 2016 vintage. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026Decanter Magazine (Jun 2020)

This solid estate has produced a classic 2016 Château Beaumont with juicy cherry fruits, leafy herbs, and saddle leather notes in its balanced, medium-bodied, straight-up delicious profile. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 88 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

Château Beaumont

With its origins in 1824, Château Beaumont is a Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Garonne. The property has been owned by Société Grands Millésimes de France since 1986, owners of Château Beychevelle, the fourth growth Saint-Julien.

The 114 hectare estate is planted 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 6,666 vines per hectare with an average age of 20 years for the vines. The vineyard is farmed on environmentally friendly principles, having used Terra Vitis and integrated farming techniques since 2004.

The harvested fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats with three weeks of maceration. Soils are well-drained, deep and gravelly. With an average annual production of 600,000 bottles, the wines are matured in oak barrels (one-third new) for between 12 and 14 months, depending on the vintage. Their wines are characterized by their supple, silky and feminine structure. The tannins are generally mellow and rarely aggressive. All this contributes to making reliable, well-balanced wines full of charm and finesse, offering great value.
