Rich and quite scented, plush with superfine tannins and an abundance of dark ripe fruit, it feels as though designed to give pleasure at a young age. A really juicy, sappy, bowl of fruit. Rating: 92-93 L&S (May 2018)

Densely packed, with lots of warmed fig, mulled blueberry, açai berry and blackberry paste flavors rolling through, scored with graphite and tar notes, carrying through a finish that has a smoldering feel. The 2016 Quinta do Vesuvio from Symington’s has a slightly more savoury bouquet than its fellow 2016 releases – earthier, almost nuttier with some lovely grilled walnut scents percolating through with time in the glass. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, notes of marmalade and dried quince infusing the cassis and black cherry fruit with high notes of blueberry and a slight saline tincture towards the well balanced, quite persistent finish. Very dark blackish crimson. Reminds me a little of the Noval Nacional for its wildness (and foot sweat?!). Rather heady mix of wild herbs and grasses. Very juicy indeed. Massive impact and drama with great grip on the end. Firm tannic grip after all that appeal. Real pace and excitement. Nervy. Convincing dry finish.
