LA PINADA

2017 Bobal Agricola de Vinos la Higuera

Grapes Bobal
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Valencia
ABV 14.5%

The grapes for this juicy and enticing Spanish Red come exclusively from 3 ha of a single parcel called “La Pinada”, growing on alluvial and clay soils. These bush-vines are really old now, planted in 1958, and are one of the key factors that make this so darned good to drink. There is a lovely intensity to the fruit - with no hard edges, no excess weight. Just an easy flow and dangerous drinakability!
None of the fruit's bright character is lost to wood as the wine is mostly aged in concrete, rather than the traditional local barrels. Altitude is key too - Utiel Requena is the undisputed capital for fine Bobal - and these old vines at 750m are about as good as it gets, this height combined with the Mediterranean climate are the perfect terroir to get expressive, bright Bobal - a wine you just want to drink.

Once considered a workhorse fit only for the most basic bulk wines, bobal has been thoroughly reappraised by Spanish winemakers. This high-altitude, old-vine take on the variety is lithe, lively and gently grippy with rosemary-inflected cranberry and plum.David Williams, The Observer (Nov 2021)

Fine Floral aroma. Cherry fruit boldly expressed on the palate and crunchy crisp acidity. Light notes of aniseed, liquorice and some finely chewy tannins. Youthful refreshing style. 'HIGHLY RECOMMENDED' Rating: 90 Decanter Magazine (Mar 2021)

A linear and bright Bobal with juicy-fruit, sweet-herb and blacktea aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Juicy tannins. Drink now. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2020)

Agricola de Vinos la Higuera

When one of our great friends in Spain told us that he had purchased some old Bobal vines, we could hardly contain our excitement. Francisco Santiso (who is also behind Eidos Albarino and Pazo da Maga Godello) started making wine with a group of friends from these vines with incredible results. From 3ha of a single parcel called 'La Pinada' in Utiel Requena - the home of great Bobal - on alluvial and clay soils, these bush-vines were planted in 1958. The combination of a high altitude (750m) and the Mediterranean climate have created some beautifully balanced and expressive wines. This humble project has already grabbed the attention of critics, and we can't wait to see what next is in store.
