NUITS SAINT GEORGES

The 2017 Nuit-Saint-Georges La Richemone Vieilles Vignes "Cuvée Ultra" has an attractive bouquet of sous-bois and tobacco-infused red berry fruit, very elegant in style and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a subtle marine influence and a tang of sour cherry and brine toward the persistent finish. Excellent. (from vines first planted in 1902). Here the densely fruited nose is a bit less floral but even spicier with its cool array of red currant, cherry, spice and earth-scented aromas. There is a bit more concentration and power to the attractively textured medium weight plus flavors thanks to the abundant amount of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the superbly long and highly complex finale. While these two wines are qualitatively similar, there is just a bit more depth of material that may ultimately make for a more complete wine. The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges La Richemone Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from vines the oldest of which were planted in 1902. It has a generous bouquet, more Vosne-like than Nuits Saint-Georges, with kirsch, touches of blood orange and even Japanese yuzu. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannin and finely judged acidity. The oak shows a little toward the finish, but that will be absorbed with time. Good potential here.
