PULIGNY MONTRACHET

2017 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère Domaine Henri Boillot

EN PRIMEUR

Wow. Even after the Pucelles there is a jaw-droppingly impressive attack here - such weight and yet such ping and bright energy again. Then it gets into his stride and rolls along with such sleek grace and unrelenting gentle push. There is breadth and power in abundance. A sophisticated big boy. Will repay the patient. Although like most of these gorgeous 2017s there is something immediately inviting here. L&S (Oct 2018)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchère 1er Cru has a light bouquet of undergrowth and wet pavement, a little subdued at first but finding its voice with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and there is some beautifully integrated oak here. Harmonious and poised with wonderful weight and precision toward the finish, where veins of white peach furnish the seductive aftertaste. Absolutely delicious. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Drinking range: 2023 - 2042 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2021)

(from 60+ year old vines and the vineyard is a whopping 4 ha monopole within Perrières). A touch of mineral reduction can be found on the markedly floral-inflected nose of white peach, spice and discreet wood nuances. There is first-rate volume to the caressing yet powerful flavors that possess excellent mid-palate density before concluding in a highly energetic, complex and beautifully well-balanced finale. This isn’t quite as structured as the Pucelles but it is still sufficiently prominent to make evident that here too patience will be rewarded. Drinking range: 2027 - Rating: 94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2019)

Big and bold with great density. Massively concentrated and ambitious. A real attempt to earn the premium. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2019)

From an enclave within the premier cru Perrières, Boillot's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère is utterly superb this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, mandarin orange, beeswax, iodine and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with striking volume and depth at the core, balanced by incisive acids that animate the long, mineral finish. Guillaume Boillot speculates that this monopole's comparative variety of mesoclimates and soil types lends the resulting wine greater complexity than would be the case with a small cuvée. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

Bright yellow. Lemon drop and oil, peach, hazelnut and flowers on the subtly complex nose. Tactile and brisk on entry, then thick and energetic in the middle palate, conveying a distinct impression of sweetness countered by pure saline minerality. The wine's peachy fruit hints at almost honeyed ripeness without losing its verve. Finishes with outstanding mounting length. This has the palate presence and depth of a grand cru. Rating: 94-96 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Sept 2018)

A domaine which dates to 1885, but which began properly in the early years of the 20th century under the current Henri's grandfather (also Henri). His son, Jean, was the one who really developed it. Henri arrived in 1975 and worked his way up, becoming the winemaker. In 2000 he began the building of the new winery at the bottom of Meursault, and he then bought out his brother and sister to keep the domaine as one, renaming it from 'Domaine Jean Boillot' to 'Domaine Henri Boillot' to avoid confusion with his brother Jean-Marc's domaine.

The Domaine totals around 14 hectares, with roughly equal surfaces of red and white, and of which just under 4ha is the Monopole vineyard of Clos de la Mouchère, a walled enclave within the premier Cru Puligny Perrières. The 2017 vintage saw the arrival of two new parcels of Grand Cru red, in Échezeaux and Latricières Chambertin
