An epic beauty that just shines with intense old vine purity. Deeply fruited, blackberry, black raspberry and garrigue notes on the nose, scented and exciting. On the palate again those old vines show their power, concentrated woodland fruits, herbs, earth and dark chocolate, rich full tannic grip, pure drive of acid, mouthfilling and deeply etched with a wonderful persistence to the finish. If you can wait this will just get better and better. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 L&S (Mar 2021)

The blockbuster 2017 Rasteau Heritage 1924 has the Provençal, perfumed, complex style of the vintage front and center. All old vine Grenache raised in concrete tanks, it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as terrific notes of ripe strawberries, black raspberries, garrigue, spice, and dried earth. Full-bodied, powerful, yet incredibly seamless and elegant, it’s a winner and well worth seeking out. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Sept 2019)

Grape varieties: Old vines of Grenache noir.

Terroir: Municipality of RASTEAU, the vines are located at an altitude of 300 m. Sloping terroir with stony and very steep clay-limestone soils. Plot-based cuvée.

Viticulture: Grenaches are in goblets. These are the oldest vines on the estate, planted in 1924. The soil is worked entirely with respect for the environment and the plant. Vinification: Manual harvest. Destemming and crushing. Fermentation from 28 to 35 days. Daily pigeages during alcoholic fermentation as well as two to three load shedding. Grenache is aged in concrete vats for 9 months to keep its fruit.

Tasting Notes: Pretty deep red color with Indian ink reflections. Fine and elegant nose of red fruits, liquorice and Agen prune. The mouth is full-bodied with melted tannins, we discover aromas of black cherries associated with gingerbread. The elegance and velvet of old black Grenache, fruity and structured.

Pairings: Prime rib with morel sauce, thrush skewers, washed rind cheeses, delicious chocolate.

Keeping: 8 years.

Domaine des Escaravailles

Domaines des Escaravailles was established in 1953 by Jean-Louis Ferran and his two sons, Daniel and Jean-Pierre, in the village of Rasteau.

Today it is run by the third generation of the family, Gilles, the son of Daniel. With vineyards on not only the clay, limestone hillsides of Rasteau, but also in Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and St Roman de Malegarde. The estate is run organically and everything is done by hand with the wines made in the cellars in the heart of the property in Rasteau.

The estate takes it's name from the Occitan word for the Scarab Beetle, which you will also find adorning the labels of the wines.
