CHABLIS

2018 Domaine Laurent Tribut

EN PRIMEUR

The Tribut family have got it spot on here. Despite the famously warm conditions in 2018, this delivers everything you could hope for! On the nose some bright apple and then the odd savoury fleck adds another dimension. Great Chablis fruit character and mineral feel. Pear and lemon flesh. True and precise - really nicely done. There is good minerality and good fruit here - spot on! Yum.L&S (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Chablis Village is a wine that I find perplexing. It is quite "yeasty" in style and lacking the essence of mineral-driven Chablis. The palate is medium-bodied with a sharp entry, slightly bitter in style, and lacking some harmony toward the finish. I have enjoyed many wonderful bottles of Tribut’s Chablis in the past, but this left me scratching my head. Rating: 0 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2020)

A fresh and notably ripe nose still manages to convey reasonably good typicity on the mix of white and yellow orchard fruit scents. The rich and attractively textured medium weight flavors possess good punch and persistence where a note of salinity helps to add a sense of lift. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 88-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

Laurent Tribut is married to Vincent Dauvissat's sister, Marie Clotilde. When he started he made his wines in the Dauvissat cellar in Chablis, but now this small family-run domaine is based in Poinchy. Laurent has now officially retired and has now handed over to three of their four children (Solange, Adeline and Gabriel), with Solange taking the lead in the winery. With Laurent’s guidance the future here looks very bright.

With just 6 hectares the quantities are small - but the quality of all the cuvées is extraordinary. Pure, powerfully driven, classically shaped there is more than a passing similarity to the wines of his brother-in-law, the head-line grabbing Vincent Dauvissat. Buyers will enjoy these long-lived wines with some time in bottle too - they have a great ability to age and patience will pay off, we recently tasted the 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 2004 with Laurent in his cellar and it was bright, young and full of vigour - nearly 15 years on, and in 2020 the 2000 Beauroy was still in it’s prime. This is brilliant, classic Chablis.
