2018 1er Cru Les Amoureuses Domaine Joseph Drouhin

40% whole bunch. From two parcels, one next to Le Musigny, one just below it. After the Grands Échezeaux, a cooler, bluer colour and on the nose fresher, tighter. Compact, sappy and close-textured, with rtight, fine-grained tannins. Sensational suave purity.L&S(Nov 2019)

This is perhaps the most floral-infused wine in the range with terrific layering that includes perfumed notes of exotic tea, clove, red and dark fruit and a whiff of sandalwood. The refined, markedly stony and wonderfully delineated flavors possess a beguiling underlying tension before culminating in a palate coating, balanced and firm finale. This is exceptionally classy and I very much like the Zen-like sense of harmony. In short, this is a knockout. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 95 Allen Meadows, 2020)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru, matured with 40% whole bunch, has an intense, feisty bouquet with hints of fresh prune permeating the red and blue fruit; precocious floral scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and very refined (more so than the aromatics at the moment). The multifaceted, satin-like finish lingers long in the mouth. Not the very best Les Amoureuses that I have encountered from Drouhin at this stage, but it delivers exactly what this wine should offer. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, 2020)

Veronique Drouhin and her team have excelled here: clove and pepper spice from 40% whole bunches, 30% new wood and fine, fluid red berry flavours that glide across the tongue like a figure skater on ice. A Pinot lover's Pinot Noir. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033 Rating: 95 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter(Dec 2019)

Deep cherry red. Seductive dark-red fruit. Very ripe cherry but the fruit smells fresh not jammy. Both spice and a light floral note as well. Chewy, dense and yet over-delivers on generous fruit even with all this tannin framework. The tannins are the freshness here, it seems. Dry and refined. Not typical perhaps but very good. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, 2019)

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it.

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months. If you do not wish to take home delivery, you may wish to consider where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. Lea & Sandeman offers duty paid and in bond storage through a dedicated storage company called Elephant Storage. For more details on the terms and fees associated with storage please go to our Storage Homepage or contact our primeurs team for more information.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.

OFFER: All wines are offered subject to availability and final confirmation.

PRICING: All prices are quoted IN BOND ex-VAT, by the case size stated. Please double check that the desired case size does match what is being offered as wines are variously listed in threes, sixes, dozens, halves and larger formats.

DELIVERY - TIMING: This is a primeur offer so the wines are not yet physically available for delivery. They will be shipped to the UK over the next eighteen months. Generally wines are shipped to your nominated location once the whole order has landed in our London City Bond account. If you require wines to be delivered by a certain date, please advise us at the time of ordering. We do not anticipate any problems but please be aware that delays to delivery may occur should Britain's possible departure from the European Union result in additional border customs checks or other regulatory requirements. Any additional or unforeseen duties, tariffs, charges or other financial liabilities relating to 'Brexit' must be due to the customer and will be added to orders as required.

DELIVERY - FEES: In bond delivery to an Elephant Storage account (for more information see 'Storage Options' opposite) is free of charge. Transfer of wines to any third party bond (i.e. not Elephant Storage) will incur an administration charge of £16.50 + VAT for all orders under £1,000. If you require wines duty paid, please indicate this in your Wishlist order form. A duty & VAT invoice will be raised once all the wines on your order are available for shipment. Once the relevant duty & VAT has been settled, we will ship the wines to your nominated address as per our normal duty paid Delivery Terms.

PAYMENT: All orders will be invoiced for immediate payment by cheque, cash, debit card or cleared funds to our account. We regret that we cannot accept credit cards for primeur orders. We reserve the right to apply a dunning charge of 2% per month on invoices unpaid after 30 days.
