CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

2018 Marquis de Laguiche 1er Cru Morgeot Joseph Drouhin

EN PRIMEUR

A quite complete nose, and on the palate it is ample and fat, yet with a sleek minerality and purity. A very supple feel; classic Morgeot really, good gourmand richness and flavour depth - salivating. The Drouhins have run this as if part of their own domaine since 1947. Drinking range: 2022 - L&S (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot 1er Cru offers orange cordial and lychee scents on the nose - a bit flat compared to its peers. The palate is well balanced with a touch of bitter lemon on the entry, orange rind mixed with mango, a bit of chewiness on the finish some waxiness on the aftertaste. A touch disjointed at the moment with a slightly honeyed finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2022)

The vibrant character shines through, along with flavors of butterscotch, peach, vanilla and almond croissant. Lean and focused, with toasty oak and a tactile finish that picks up a mineral element. Drink now through 2025. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 93 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (May 2021)

Honey blossom, citrus and cooked pears, but ever so subtle on the nose. Full-bodied and layered with lovely fruit, light yogurt and pie crust at the end. Really appreciate the flavor and complexity at the end here. Drink or hold. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2020)

This is ever-so-mildly phenolic in character (think olive or nut oil nuances) with additional notes of petrol, resin, white fruit compote and a dollop of toasty oak. The exceptionally rich, concentrated and powerful flavors also coat the mouth with dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the solidly powerful and focused finish that delivers excellent length. There is a touch of backend warmth but overall, this is really quite good. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2020)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) comes from a vineyard that tends to produce millerandé berries. This has an intense, powerful bouquet with hints of menthol permeating the citrus fruit, developing a more fumé style with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with hints of passion fruit and peach on the entry, becoming spicier and subtly Muscat-like toward the very satisfying, persistent finish. Excellent. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Inviting, generous and spicy on the nose. Ripe citrus with a touch of almost-ripe apricot. Super-creamy and rounded in the mouth yet with good freshness. A little softer than the Genevrières and not as long but lovely balance already. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

Despite the size of their vineyard holding, not all Drouhin's wines come from their own domaine, but most of the other wines do come from long-term contracts, such as exists with the Marquis de Laguiche wines. In all but name these wines are 'Domaine' wines, and the vineyards are cared for and the wines vinified with exactly the same care.
