Very dark expression here - radically different to the Clos de la Roche. Coal-black even; very silky-fat wrapping, but the force is there, grippy and powerfully intense. Very backward - the finish is still super-intense. Needs more time in barrel to gather finesse, but it's all here. L&S (Nov 2019)

(from purchased fruit and released under the Maison Virgile Lignier label, 100% whole cluster). Here too the expressive and more elegant nose is markedly ripe but it’s also much fresher with its perfumed combination of very spicy red and dark currant aromas. The exceptionally rich, even opulent, larger-scaled and seductive flavors brim with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm but not really austere finale. This is a classic and seriously good CSD. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 100% whole bunch and no new barrels this year. It has a very intense bouquet of strong undergrowth and bay leaf/rose petal aromas, very well defined and showing more complexity than the Clos de la Roche. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, layers of black-tea-infused black fruit and a slightly grainy-textured finish that is extremely well balanced. This is a class act. Drinking range: 2024 - 2050 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Spicy ripe and yet delicate... long and very floral finish. There is a exotic and aromatic note... delicacy to the texture.. and very long. Airy. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 96 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2019)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
