From Chabiots, Chatelots and Sentiers, so really right across the premiers crus at the foot of the hill. Very distinctive fruit, quite high-toned and floral, redcurrant jelly sweetness, fine and lifted texture, nicely long. Drinking range: 2028 - 2036 L&S (Oct 2020)

(from purchased fruit in Sentiers, Chabiots and Chatelots; released under the Maison Virgile Lignier label; 100% whole cluster). This too is reduced but with a specific kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as cassis blossoms (bourgeon de cassis). The sleek, generous and sappy medium weight flavors exhibit ample minerality on the relatively refined if slightly austere finish that is firm enough to suggest that while this could be enjoyed young, at least a few years of bottle aging would be beneficial, and it should reward a decade plus. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 89-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

From Chabiots, Chatelots and Sentiers. Dark colour with one of those noses which hovers between oxidation and reduction. 100% whole bunch. Black fruit, some coffee and chocolate notes, good intensity, this lacks a little lift and freshness at the moment. Tasted: November 2020 3/5 stars Rating: 90-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny "Cuvée Jules" 1er Cru, which contains 100% whole bunches, has a very opulent bouquet that is heady in style, flirts with over-ripeness. The palate is sappy on the entry with saturated tannins, candied black fruit laced with white pepper and blood orange. It all leads to a structured finish that feels a little too sweet and glossy compared to some of Virgile Lignier’s best wines this vintage. Let’s see how it shows in bottle. Drinking range: 2023 - 2036 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
