CHARMES CHAMBERTIN

2019 Grand Cru Domaine Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

50% whole bunch in this. As usual 1/3 Mazoyères. The nose is sweetly pure - and so is the entry - the purity of the fruit is extraordinary - and it's only then that the energy and tension comes through, the Mazoyères element providing the power and savoury length. 'It always shows a little lighter in barrel and then puts on weight in bottle', says Loïc. Drinking range: 2030 - 2050L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Like the Champeaux, the nose is brooding and backward though pretty with its array of earth, liqueur-like dark berries and lovely spice wisps. There is again outstanding volume to the beautifully textured large-scaled flavors that exude a bracing salinity on the sneaky long and well-balanced finale. Here too plenty of patience will be required. Drinking range: 2039 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is also full of promise, mingling aromas of cherries and licorice with hints of loamy soil, peonies and espresso roast. Full-bodied, deep and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a lively spine of acidity, it's especially bright and dynamic, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish. It was vinified with 60% whole bunches and raised in two-thirds new oak. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the usual blend of vineyards: two-thirds in Charmes-Chambertin itself and one-third in Mazoyères. It contains 60% whole bunch and 66% new oak. Very generous and opulent on the nose of dark cherries plus hints of baked gingerbread and clementine; this is very intense. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured opening. The Mazoyères component feels more influential than the Charmes, and the grippy, overtly saline finish does not want to let go. This will be fascinating to watch develop. I love the sense of control throughout. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Has contained one-third Mayozères since 1996. Picked 9 September and ‘we were the only ones in the vineyard’, reported Loïc Dugat. Very hot site so a bit of worry for him. Cask sample.
Very ripe nose. Big, ripe, bold and sweet initially with some life and zest but lots to chew on and very satisfying balance. Even racy. Clean and fresh overall. Serious nose. Solid black-fruit impression and dry – but not drying – on the finish.
Drinking range: 2028 - 2044 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2020)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
