CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET

2019 Rouge Goujonne Domaine Hubert Lamy

EN PRIMEUR

Rich and an intense fruit. Lovely balance and above all energy. There's a little scrape of tannin - give it about three years, but it will drink for ten. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033L&S (Nov 2021)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Deep cherry fruit, hibiscus, white pepper and fine herbs. Shows concentration and mid-palate flesh on the palate, with medium to full body and firm, nicely chewy tannins. A solid Chassagne, showing the typical fleshiness of the reds produced here, though often with less finesse and airiness. Drink or hold. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2022)

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne Rouge has a delightful, fresh morello cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet. The palate is well balanced with a tart red fruit, fine depth and gentle grip on the finish. Playful, but perhaps short-term. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

(from a 1.06 ha parcel planted in 1950). A spicy, fresh and pepper-inflected nose presents primarily an array of dark berry fruit. The delicious, vibrant and solidly concentrated mediumbodied flavors possess unusually good depth and persistence for a Chassagne villages. This is excellent for what it is and highly recommended. Drinking range: 2027 - Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2021)

Notes of sweet red berries, plums, spices and petals introduce Lamy's 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne, a medium-bodied, bright and fleshy wine built around lively acids and powdery tannins. A touch finer-boned than the more overtly muscular 2018, it is well worth seeking out. Rating: 89-91 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Pretty mid purple, very attractive perfume ripe fruit nose, quite soft on the palate, which I don’t think I have ever said before about this or any other Lamy red, long and charming. Tasted: October 2020 ** Rating: 88-89 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2020)

Olivier Lamy has built on the solid foundations his father Hubert prepared with twenty years and more of work in the vineyards. Today the Domaine has 18.5 hectares of vines - 80% are Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. The vines are in several appellations - Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, as well as the excellent Bourgogne Blanc. The reputation of the domaine is now made, but the Saint Aubins, both red and white, remain some of the bargains of Côte d'Or, and challenge the supposed superiority of the grander village names on a regular basis, both in terms of young and mature wines.

Olivier's wine-making style and preference is to emphasise the fresh and the mineral side of his wines, and there is very little new wood in this cellar, with many wines with no new wood at all, and that is with the wines in 600 litre demi-muids rather that the classic Burgundy (225 litre) fût. Certainly Oliver's whites do have an arrow-like purity and intensity, and seem to age completely straight and true.

The reds are worth more than a casual mention too. Olivier has been getting some consultation help from Sylvain Pataille, and the wines have energy and bounce along with the supple tannins and ripeness.
