KUMEU RIVER 'ESTATE'

2019 Chardonnay

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 14%

2019 was a stellar vintage here in New Zealand's North Island. Tasted directly after the Kumeu Village wine, this is almost flirty in comparison. Much more attractive and effusive on the nose. More texture. Great bright lines. Apple and tart peach. Multi layered and generous but fine lines as well. They say 'best ever' - and on the basis of this tasting we cannot argue! Incredibly good. The other producer that never puts a chardonnay foot wrong is Michael Brajkovich of Kumeu River, from a spot just north of Auckland on the north island. Even his 2019 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is a stone-fruited joy.Jane MacQuitty, The Times (Apr 2021)

This vintage punches well above its weight division with such complex and expertly curated style. Peach, nectarine, lemon and grapefruit aromas with flinty and pithy allure. The palate has a core of intense peach and citrus flavors with driving mineral and stony undertow to the long, fresh finish. Stunning value here. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jan 2021)

The estate Chardonnay is a blend of six different vineyards with approximately 20% fermented in new oak barrels. Texturally, this cuvée offers a sense of flow; it is relaxed in its own skin but provides welcome tension on the precise finish thanks to a line of firm acidity that will leave you smacking your lips. The 20% new oak is well integrated, contributing delicate nougat flavors, and allowing the subtle nectarine and honeydew melon flavors to shine on the medium-length finish.
