Here the low yields have translated into a greater density than usual - rich and with good definition, concentrated but it still has the inimitable drinkability of wines from this domaine. Finish dense with fruit and very long. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026 L&S (Oct 2020)

The 2019 Mercurey Vieilles Vignes has a punchy but well defined bouquet with ample raspberry, redcurrant and cranberry scents, a touch of loam and fern emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gorgeous, voluminous entry of red berry fruit, slightly confit in style, hints of white pepper and sage. This has a caressing mouthfeel and real depth towards the finish. Utterly delicious. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2021)

Spot on, beautifully vibrant, pure, herbal and floral, this is a delightful wine with boundless red cherry energy and it ought to be keenly priced, too. Rating: 17+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2021)

Slightly raw note on the nose with some leafiness. But this is followed by a substantial, if robust rather than subtle, mouthful of fruit, and some slight bitterness on the end. Country wine… but sincere. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 15.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2021)

Domaine François Raquillet

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1990, with his wife Emmanuelle. Records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s, and Francois is the eleventh generation.

With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels (up to 50% new wood for the Premiers Crus) and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. François explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style - combined with good mid-palate weight.
