Virgile used to buy the grapes off this plot, but now he is working the vines too. 80% whole bunch. Sweet ripe dark berry fruit - not that distinctive yet, but the palate has a Vosne-like weave, dense with flavours and a subtle spice, very rich and there's clearly more to come. We pause as we are chatting - and it proves amazingly long, with an arresting density of flavour still coming out a couple of minutes later. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 L&S (Oct 2020)

(released under the Maison Virgile Lignier label; 50% whole cluster). A markedly earthy and sauvage-suffused nose displays notes of mostly red and dark currant and plum. The solidly intense, tautly muscular and delineated middle weight flavors possess a rustic mouthfeel as well as fine depth and persistence. This concentrated and moderately austere effort isn’t elegant, indeed it’s robust, but I like the frank character. Patience suggested. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgey 1er Cru has an airy bouquet with high-toned blueberry and black cherry fruit laced with violet and peony. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, well judged acidity, quite high-toned with a very sweet finish that just needs a little more restraint and more Pinoté. Not bad, but I might just prefer the 2018. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)
Domaine Lignier-Michelot
A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.
In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.
The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
