Planted between 1931 and 1934. 40% whole bunch this year - the largest amount he has ever used, and this combined with the freshness of 2019 has given a lively wine with tautness in the tannins, folded into the richness that this wonderful site always gives. All here, but really almost completely closed. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 L&S (Oct 2020)

Deep crimson colour. The bouquet suggests a wine of significant power. The oak is quite present, with a coconut element. Very tightly wound but at first struggling to push past the oaky straightjacket. It will, and indeed is already beginning to. This is attractively nuanced, though even now it seems as though the barrel is just slightly too intrusive. The elegant finish though indicates finesse in the style. Several minutes later the fruit entirely dominates the bouquet. Drink from 2029-2040. Tasted: September 2023. Drinking range: 2029 - 2040 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2023)

(from a .55 ha parcel; 35% whole clusters). Here too the nose is overtly floral in character though relative to the Les St. Georges the dark berry fruit aromas are much more exotic and spicier. The sleekly muscular, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density and power before culminating in a robust, firmly structured and wonderfully complex finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is a rich and classically styled Richebourg that is very definitely built-to-age as it should be. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

30% whole bunch. Imperial purple. Thibault felt able to go a bit further with his Richebourg in 2019, giving it a couple or three punchdowns at the end, which releases more sugar so as to keep the fermentation going for an extra week. Really quite gorgeous depth of aromatics. Peonies. Plump more than precise. Very suave and sensual right across the palate, slightly more at front than back, that very light astringency to finish, maybe the punching down. A little liquorice touch too. Finishes very well. This is going to be at least a very good Richebourg – and maybe more. Tasted: November 2020 **** Rating: 94 - 97 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
