PAZO DA MAGA

2020 Ribeira Sacra

Grapes Godello
Colour White
Origin Spain
Sub-district Ribeira Sacra
ABV 13%

Now labelled 'Pazo da Maga' after a certain famous Rioja producer thought it sounded too similar to their name, this Godello is on a roll and better than ever. Wonderful texture - almost Puligny-esque, but never too much - this is delightfully fresh and light on its feet. Firm white peachiness with a mineral backdown, balanced with a gorgeous core of lime, this is a cracker. Delicious on its own or with fresh seafood. L&S (Jun 2021)

Greenish straw and the most wonderful combination of rocks, marine influence and extract. Great build. One of the better Godellos I have come across outside Valdeorras. Lots of structure suggests this has real potential to age. I may be underestimating how long. VGV Drinking range: 2021 - 2024 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2021)

Jancis Robinson's Favourite Whites 2021
Smartly packaged brilliant value from the steep slopes of the Sil valley in north west Spain where viticulture is described as ‘heroic’. Made from the great Godello grape whose finer wines have white burgundy structure but more extract.

Pazo da Maga

Antonio Lombardia is a brilliant winemaker and the owner of some beautiful vineyards. For a few years we were delighted to work with him when he formed half of Pena das Donas, making fantastic Godellos – they became firm favourites.

Sadly Antonio and his business partner have gone their separate ways – with Antonio & Francisco wanting more freedom to make better, purer wines – rather than building up volume, which was what he was being encouraged to do.

So it was a bold move to go it alone – but a move we are delighted he has made! With his own business and his newly-built winery at Pazo da Maga, he is free to make the Godello as he likes it – and as we so admired before.

Everything here is hand-picked, carefully destemmed and then fermented at cool temperatures to get the purest expression of Godello from his prime fruit. This sees no oak – but spends a good amount of time in tank on the lees to intensify the flavour and add texture – so simple yet this is intelligent, careful wine-making and he is certainly making the best wines we have seen yet
