Closed with a red wax capsule, the Alberelli di Giodo 2021 Nerello Mascalese does a great job of transmitting energy, finesse and elegance. This is an exceptional expression of Etna's protagonist grape. It effortlessly shows small berry aromas of cassis and wild berry along with some dried herb, mountain flower, orange peel and crushed stone. Carlo Ferrini has hit this nail squarely on the head. Aromas of plum, iron and pumice with some flowers. It鈥檚 medium-bodied with powdered, fine tannins. It鈥檚 layered and elegant yet so structured. Very long and focused. Translucent red with a deep ruby core. This has more kick than many Etna wines, a little more grip, still oh so juicy and full of minerality, salinity, pummice stone, redcurrant, mandarin, saline cracker, oyster shell and vivid fresh fruits that are so distinctive to this location. Both super dry and yet super fruity at the same time, with clear acidities that give definition and lift. This is tingling, exciting, juicy, clings on and just subtly demands you to take another sip. As so often with wines from this part of Sicily, it brings home the much-maligned concept of minerality, and is great value. 80 year old vines, 35hl/h yield, just 7,000 bottles from north facing slopes set at 950m, aged in large 500 and 700l oak casks, then moved into concrete. Alberelli di Giodo

Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.

Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.
