Paprika, raspberries, wild cherries and rosemary on the nose. Bright and peppery, very fresh, with a medium body and fine-grained tannins. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Rating: 90 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2023)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2021 Cabernet Franc Glass Collection comprises some of the youngest vines of the estate on steep slopes, aged for 12 months in 25% new French oak. Dark berry fruit commingles with licorice and light minty aromas on the nose, more backward than the Merlot by direct comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of black pepper on the entry, tea leaves and a little brine. Fine grip, perhaps missing some complexity and nuance towards the finish as a varietal Cabernet Franc is wont to be. It coheres nicely in the glass, softening just a touch with aeration, so decant this for a couple of hours, and it should drink well for the next decade. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2023)

Glenelly Estate

Glenelly Estate in the Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, is the home estate of May de Lencquesaing, previous owner of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Bordeaux. This is no retirement home, but an ambitious project to make serious wines in one of the Cape's most beautiful and best sited vineyard areas. May has recruited Luke O'Cuinneagain as winemaker, whose career includes Chateau Fieuzal, Angelus, Screaming Eagle and five years at Rustenberg before joining Glenelly. He is assisted by Adi Badenhost as consultant winemaker. There are three ranges of wine made at the estate. The 'Glass Collection'; premium varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. The 'Grand Vin': the signature blend of the estate, using Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 month in oak barrels. 'Lady May'; the flagship wine made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in new oak.
