70% whole bunch. Fresh blackberries just picked on the nose, the palate cool and fresh and silky with a beautiful balance of acidity and slightly saline weight, so that on the finish it is more about mineral than fruit. The vines here are now 50 years old. Drinking range: 2026 - 2032 L&S (Oct 2022)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis en la Rue de Vergy, including around two-thirds whole bunches, has a well-defined bouquet. The stems are fairly noticeable at present, though that will be soaked up by the fruit with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, fine tannins. The 2021 is harmonious and quite crunchy; blackberry commingles with tar and subtle tobacco notes towards its satisfying finish. Good potential, but patience required. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine now of 13.5 hectares, some owned, some in fermage with a little bought in. An average of 290 barrels a year. 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis, so it's lutte raisonnée.

The wines are made with the least intervention possible, with lots of whole bunches. little extraction (one or two pigeages but mostly he's into remontages, then aged in barrel with 15-20% new wood. They have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.

Lignier-Michelot Vertical Mixed 6

The Domaine Lignier-Michelot Vertical Discovery Case (6 Bottles)
If you want to understand why Virgile Lignier is considered one of the star domaines of Burgundy, you don't just need a bottle; you need a journey. This mixed case is a masterclass in terroir, featuring a stunning vertical of his best plots across widely different vintages.
Virgile took over the family domaine in 2000 and immediately set about changing things, stopping herbicides, ploughing the soils, and moving towards organic viticulture. His style is defined by the use of whole bunches and minimal intervention, resulting in wines that combine body and richness with a lively clarity of expression.
The Grand Cru: The headline act is the 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru. This is Charmes Chambertin with attitude, a terrific ball of power and energy made with 100% whole bunch fruit. It is silky, smooth, and seamless.
The Premier Crus: We have included three distinct Premier Crus to compare. The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 'Les Chenevery' is flowing, graceful and classy with defined red and black fruit. Then, you can compare two vintages of the Morey-Saint-Denis 'Aux Charmes': the 2016, which is sleek and sophisticated with a powerful flow, and the 2017, which has real intense power and a seductive mouthfeel.
The Village Jewels: Finally, discover the quality of his village wines (often from very old vines). The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes is taut and bright with very Chambollesque character. Rounding it off is the 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis 'Rue de Vergy', a cool, fresh wine from 50-year-old vines that finishes on a mineral note rather than just fruit.
