Not hugely expressive immediately, but there’s certainly plenty of character and complexity. Oranges, candied lemon peel, apple compote. A bright, inviting floral character emerges as it opens. Alluringly, deliciously silky on the palate, cut through with racy freshness. The sweetness and acidity are very well poised. A little spice and crackle on the finish, too. A lot to enjoy. The 2021 Tokaji 1413 Édes Szamorodni is 90% fermented in stainless steel and 10% in used barrels for 12 months. It has a clean and pure bouquet that is subtly Riesling-like with a petrolly character and tropical fruit aromas developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous opening, well-judged acidity and impressive purity. The oak takes a back seat on the finish. While not overly complex, it serves as a fine introduction to the delights of sweet Tokaji. Drinking range: 2024 - 2028 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2024)

Disznókő

The name Disznókő - the rock of the wild boar - was first recorded in 1413 and refers to a large rock sat atop a small hill overlooking the vineyards. Listed as a "first growth" as far back as 1732, this 150ha vineyard in the south west of the Tokaji region has long been regarded as one of the region's finest.

As with much of Tokaji, Disznókő's fortunes suffered under nationalisation during the Communist era. But, in 1992, it was purchased by AXA Millésimes (owners of Château Pichon Longueville and Quinta do Noval, amongst others) who have reinvigorated Disznókő and put in the love and investment required to return it to the top rank of Tokaji estates.
