CHÂTEAU MEYNEY

The 2022 Meyney has an intense, finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, loam and light briny scents that unfold with confidence. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with firm tannins. It is not dissimilar to the Lilian Ladouys in style, though there is a touch more finesse and pepperiness on the finish. This always represents good value. Spicy, stony and floral at the same time with deep blue fruit and hints of pine, incense and cloves. Veins of tannins show a mineral verve. The 2022 Meyney is a serious overachiever. Dark, virile and imposing, the 2022 packs a serious punch. Black fruit, cedar, leather, licorice, dried herbs and espresso are beautifully amplified. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot. 37 hl/ha. Cask sample. Deep, bright, crimson hue. Lively and lifted with a touch of well-integrated vanilla oak. Dark fruit and pencil lead as it opens. Ripe and juicy but keen and long as well. Plenty of polished tannin behind. Good acidity and refreshment. Dry but not drying finish. A rather dense and slightly moody nose here, the dark fruit expressive but captured within a frame of dark, toasted oak. It has a sense of definition though, and the palate also presents this, while it also admits the darker fruit elements alongside the dark, spicy toast of the oak. The texture, however, is delicious, savoury and seamless, sinewy rather than fat, the fruit, structure and oak perfectly wrapped up, and it is only in the very finish that the wealth of tannins reveal themselves. The 2022 Meyney was picked from 14 September to 5 October at 37hL/ha. This has a really lovely nose with layers of red fruit interlaced with loamy, pencil lead aromas, focused and very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured opening. A "solid" Saint-Estèphe, quite taut and linear. One sample lacked a bit of vigor on the finish, so called for another, which displays far more precision and energy. This is what my assessment is based upon. The 2022 Meyney is very exotic in this vintage. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, orange peel, mint, sweet spice and rose petal give the 2022 striking inner perfume. I can't remember tasting a Meyney quite like this. Drinking range: 2028 - 2042 Rating: 90-92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2023)

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, licorice and petals, the 2022 Meyney is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit girdled by sweet but firm tannins.
