A vineryard that should perform strongly in this kind of vintage, because located right next to the river for air conditioning, with a mix of gravel with clear clay sections to retain freshness, and it's definitely one to look out for. Layers of redcurrant, raspberry and blackcurrant fruits, juicy mouthwatering finish, peony, pencil lead, orange peel, 3.75ph. Certainly this is a great example of Meyney. Hubert de Boüard consultant. A buy. Drinking range: 2026 - 2042 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2023)

It was a salient reminder of quite how well placed Meyney is - particularly in a warm vintage. They must lay claim to being one of the coolest spots in the Medoc, with vines running down to the cooling waters of the Gironde and they're also situated on some of the highest ground around - at a dizzying 13m! Below the gravel lies blue clay in good plots and this also helped retain moisture and add a freshness to the wine. With a generous slug of Petit Verdot too - the alcohol remains low at a very respectable 13.5%, rare in this vintage. Although dark and with a gentle brooding line of savour this remains pure, long and juicily brisk on the palate. Lots of dark forest berries dominate the core and then some hedgerow scents too and citrus kick perk things up and push to a lifted, fresh finish. Good effort. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 13% Petit Verdot.L&S (Apr 2023)
This always represents good value. Spicy, stony and floral at the same time with deep blue fruit and hints of pine, incense and cloves. Veins of tannins show a mineral verve. This is firm, powerful and long. A bit too young at this stage but already showing potential. A very good vintage. Drink after 2028. Rating: 95 Zekun Shuai www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2025)
The 2022 Meyney has turned out very well, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that's rich and seamless, exhibiting an integration of tannin that can't always be taken for granted at this address. In fact, this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out. Drinking range: 2030 - 2055 Rating: 93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)
Château Meyney
Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.
The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.
In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
