Now labelled 'Pazo da Maga' after a certain famous Rioja producer thought it sounded too similar to their name, this Godello seems to go from strength to strength. Gorgeously textured, but never too weighty - so bright and fresh - this is a delight. Pithy lime and a firm white peachiness are beautifully balanced by a crisp mineral streak. Lea & Sandeman hosted a ‘35 years’ tasting in the autumn, and it reminded me just how time flies. I have been buying wine from this incredible company from day one! MG is the finest Godello of the year, and it is a steal. Generous, luxurious, near-tropical and yet white-knuckle dramatic, this is a must-buy for lovers of genuinely elite Spanish white wines. Pazo da Maga
Antonio Lombardia is a brilliant winemaker and the owner of some beautiful vineyards. For a few years we were delighted to work with him when he formed half of Pena das Donas, making fantastic Godellos – they became firm favourites.
Sadly Antonio and his business partner have gone their separate ways – with Antonio & Francisco wanting more freedom to make better, purer wines – rather than building up volume, which was what he was being encouraged to do.
So it was a bold move to go it alone – but a move we are delighted he has made! With his own business and his newly-built winery at Pazo da Maga, he is free to make the Godello as he likes it – and as we so admired before.
Everything here is hand-picked, carefully destemmed and then fermented at cool temperatures to get the purest expression of Godello from his prime fruit. This sees no oak – but spends a good amount of time in tank on the lees to intensify the flavour and add texture – so simple yet this is intelligent, careful wine-making and he is certainly making the best wines we have seen yet
