This is 100% Semillon in 2023. Such an enticing nose here, expressive and clearly sweet, but in a modern style, with white peach, crushed gravel, lemon peel and chamomile notes, very focused. modern and swish. The palate follows on from this very convincing aromatic profile with piles of delicious white peach, mango, apricot and mineral substance, underpinned by beautiful seams of bitterness and fresh acidity. An absolutely delicious composition, with piles of pure and mouth-watering fruit, sweetness and vigour, coming from the wine’s remarkable seam of fresh acidity. A truly great Sigalas-Rabaud in the making. Tasted twice. The residual sugar is 140 g/l, and the alcohol is 13.8%. Rating: 96-98 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Sigalas Rabaud is still taking shape in barrel, yet it possesses notable depth and textural richness, even in this somewhat unsettled state. I especially admire its dynamic energy and overall vibrancy. White peach, jasmine, spice, mint and exotic flowers all grace a Sauternes that is distinguished by its flavor concentration and complexity. Drinking range: 2027 - 2043 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

This has a sweet spiced-pear, apple-tart and light honey character. Sweet, medium-bodied palate and a salty, spicy finish. Fresh and balanced. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)

Château Sigalas Rabaud

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 At 14ha, Sigalas-Rabaud is the smallest of the Premier Cru Sauternes estates. It has been owned by the same family since Henri de Sigalas purchased Château Rabaud in 1863. His son, Pierre, sold off a good portion of the estate in 1903 to Adrien Promis, giving rise to the neighbouring Château Rabaud-Promis. Oddly, between 1929 and 1949, the two estates employed the same Estate Manager and they were virtually run as one, but they are today quite seperate. The vineyards are planted with 98% Semillon and just 2% Sauvignon Blanc. The influence of oak in Sigalas-Rabaud is, perhaps, a little lower than other Sauternes. Until 1990, wines were fermented in stainless-steel and aged only partially in wood. Even today, although fermented and aged in barrique, only a third of barrels are new each year.
