CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT

2023 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Grapes Sauv Blanc, Sémillon
Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 14%

This is 100% Semillon, and it was picked at a yield of 12 hl/ha, from September 17th onwards. Aromatically it carries one of the defining features of this vintage, a very fresh and bright saline freshness, here intertwined with chamomile, white peach, white freesia and crushed white pebbles. It is certainly very different to the 2021 and 2022 vintages! The palate is fresh and bright, with layers of white peach, pressed lemon, crushed pebbles, herbal tea, white freesia and salted citrus, with superb veins of minerals and acids, set within a delicious and tangible substance. Brilliantly bright and fresh, with incisive acidity, this is another superb expression of the Suduiraut vineyard. Delicious, and so long, and so thoroughly charged with energy. A stunner, which I was fortunate enough to taste twice, and I savoured every drop. The residual sugar is 150 g/l, and the alcohol is 14%. Rating: 97-100 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2024)

The 2023 Suduiraut (100% Sémillon) is a real stunner. Light on its feet yet wonderfully deep, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers, apricot and passion fruit. Readers will find a Sauternes that is more finesse than power. The 2023 is essentially a blend of three picks. The first was done at the end of September and accounted for 20% of the crop. The core of the vineyard, about 75%, was picked in a day ten window in October, following the September rains. A smaller third pick rounded out the harvest. Drinking range: 2026 - 2043 Rating: 98-100 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

The purity of the botrytis grabs your attention, with density and intensity to the dried fruit, sweetness and length. Very spicy and long. Almost oily. Really rich. 150g/L residual sugar. 100% semillon. Rating: 97-98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2024)

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
