2023 Les Granges Domaine Bernard Baudry

Grapes Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Loire
Other Certified Organic
Village Chinon
ABV 12%

From a parcel of 30- to 40-year-old vines in sandy, gravelly alluvial soils. Certified organic, and farmed with biodynamic methods as well. Fermented in stainless-steel tank and aged 9 months in concrete.
This wine is a consistent bargain, but even more so in the temperate 2023 vintage. It鈥檚 open and giving, ripe yet nervy, Franc's green streak well balanced by plenty of juicy red fruit. It also has depth, a meaty note that, combined with the peppery notes, recalls steak au poivre. I can鈥檛 believe a bottle like this is so well distributed and so affordable.

The 2023 Les Granges comes from sandy alluvial soils close to the Vienne, and was vinified in stainless steel before moving into concrete. It largely remained in cuve at the time of my visit, but this is a tasting from a small-volume early bottling. It has a beautiful colour in the glass, concentrated and vibrant, which had me checking the vintage. A classically poised nose, filled with warm, dark but fresh fruit, cherry stone, blackcurrant and blackberry. The palate takes this and adds a more floral edge, producing a charming and lightly textured style, fresh with just the barest touch of tannin. Fine grained and absolutely joyous. Drink now. The alcohol on the label is 12%. Rating: 92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2024)

Domaine Bernard Baudry

Bernard Baudry was born into a Chinon winemaking family in Cravant-les-C么teaux, Loire. Having studied oenology in Beaune, he started making his own wines in 1982, with only two hectares of vines. Today the estate is made up of 30 hectares, from six different sites, all of which are worked without the use of artificial herbicides or pesticides. His wines reflect the great versatility of Cabernet Franc when grown on different sites and are very much 'terroir' driven. Matthieu, his son has been working with Bernard since 2000 and now does most of the wine-making - the tradition continues. Beautiful wines, purely made, crisp and juicy Cabernet Franc.
