Seven grams of acidity and seven grams of residual sugar is the "magic" formula for Jean Smit when it comes to producing Riesling. Made to go with Japanese cuisine, this has sweet and sour flavours of Granny Smith apples and passion fruit and a chiselled, focused finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2031 Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Sept 2025)

This cool, fragrant white has notes of lime peel, green apples, peaches and jasmine. It’s medium-bodied, delicate and engaging. Drink now. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2024)

The 2023 Riesling Elgin is the only cuvée that is destemmed, with whole berries pressed and transferred to concrete vats for a relatively warmer fermentation. It aged on the lees for 11 months. This is pure and refined on the nose, reminding me of a fine Clare Valley Riesling with its aromas of pressed white flowers and very subtle oily scents. The palate is well balanced with an orange-rind-tinged entry. Cohesive and expressive of its varietal, this will be ready to go from bottling, though it should also reward time in bottle. There is 7g/l residual sugar here, but you would never know it. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2024)

Moya Meaker

Canadian businessman and former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby, David Curl married South African born Genevieve Hamilton-Brown which ultimately led them to Elgin where they acquired a farm called Habibi, planted mainly to apples but also including small parcels of Pinot Noir and Shiraz, the resulting wines named after Genevieve’s late mother Moya Meaker, who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1959.

The Global Riesling Tour: A Masterclass in the World's Finest White Grape
As we celebrate International Riesling Day, it is worth remembering a sentiment famously shared by wine critic Jancis Robinson: that Riesling could quite easily claim to be the finest white grape variety in the world.
Far from being confined to the sweet, traditional styles of the past, Riesling is an incredibly versatile, global chameleon. It is a grape that thrives in extremity, producing brilliant, bone-dry wines everywhere from the steep slate banks of Germany to the rugged hills of Australia.
To showcase this unmatched ability to transmit the precise characteristics of a vineyard, we have curated a 6-bottle mixed case that tours the historic Old World heartlands of the grape, alongside a few carefully chosen New World and global counterparts.
What's Inside the Mixed Case:
2023 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett, Weingut Lehnert-Veit (Mosel, Germany): To drink this is to taste history. The family has been growing vines in the Mosel since 1653, and today, the 10th generation works the famed quartzite and slate soils of the 'Grosse Lage' Goldtröpfchen.
2023 Riesling Trocken, Weingut Braunewell (Rheinhessen, Germany): The Braunewell family has been making wine in Rheinhessen for over 300 years. This bone-dry, thirst-quenching expression crackles with citrus energy and intense minerality.
2023 Riesling, Domaine Marcel Deiss (Alsace, France): A textbook Alsace Riesling from a contrarian genius. Jean-Michel Deiss continues to prove why his organic field blends are some of the most compelling white wines on earth, offering notes of mandarin and pink grapefruit.
2024 Riesling, Tim Smith Wines (Eden Valley, Australia): A former cellar hand who fell in love with wine in the Rhône, Tim now crafts tiny batches of Riesling from the high country of the Eden Valley.
2024 Riesling, Manni Nössing (Alto Adige, Italy): From the deeply Alpine Eisackthal Valley in northern Italy, Manni produces just 6 hectares of crystalline, wet-stone-scented Riesling, firmly rejecting the heavy styles of his neighbours.
2023 Riesling, Moya Meaker (Elgin, South Africa): Made to pair perfectly with Japanese cuisine, this highly-rated cool-climate Riesling delivers sweet and sour flavours of Granny Smith apples and a beautifully chiselled, focused finish.
This case is designed for discovery and is a true masterclass in terroir. At under £125, it is an excellent opportunity to stock the fridge with serious, precise white wines.
We suggest adding a second case, or perhaps a bottle of your favourite red, to reach our £150 free delivery threshold and enjoy complimentary shipping.
