The 2024 Beychevelle might very well be the wine of the vintage in Saint-Julien. It is certainly among the very best I tasted on the Left Bank. Plush, inky and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2024 is so silky and inviting. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mocha and spice are some of the many notes that stain the palate. The sustained, resonant finish is a thing of beauty. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2032 - 2054 Rating: 95-97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2025)

Good depth and complexity here from this light, acid-driven vintage. Violets, fresh herbs, blackcurrants, berries and a touch of paprika and white pepper. Bright and succulent on the palate with firm, crunchy tannins and a structured finish. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2025)
The 2024 Beychevelle was picked from September 24 until October 9 and will mature in 70% new oak. This has a nicely composed, warm and sensual bouquet with plush blackberry, cassis and touches of violet. The 42% Merlot is very expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with, again, quite luxuriant tannins that lend this Beychevelle more comeliness than you would anticipate given the growing season. Perhaps it just misses a little sustain on the finish, but otherwise, this is a fine Saint-Julien. 13.3% alcohol. Drinking range: 2029 - 2050 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
55 CS 42 M 3 PV 13.2% Lush blue and black fruit with a chalky mineral complexity and great depth here. Very inviting. Powerful fruit and tannin weight, this is another of the Grands Crus Classés which really defies the leanness of the vintage and produces a wine of terroir. Palatecoating depth and richness, with some silkiness of texture already. Fine bold ripe tannins and great freshness and length. A fantastic performance. Rating: 94 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)
Château Beychevelle
St Julien Quatrième cru 1855 Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the first Duke of Epernon, was a powerful man. He was an Admiral and the Governor of Guyenne under King Henri III and in deference to him, so it is said, ships passing his estate on the River Gironde would dip their sails - this "baisse-voile" (or "bacha velo" in the local Gascon tongue) became "Beychevelle", and accounts for the presence of a rather fanciful ship on the label. The griffon at the prow of said ship echos the griffon in Greek mythology who guarded Dionysus's wine goblet. The fine château was built in the 18th Century, extended in the 19th, and has recently been restored. The vineyards are 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot with a little each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Wines are aged in wood for 18 months, with 50% of the barriques being new each year.
