Deep garnet-purple colored. Prances out of the glass with showy notes of red cherry pie, red currant jelly, and black raspberries, opening out to suggestions of rose oil, cardamom, and star anise with a touch of forest floor. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the multi-layered fruit, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note. This is a stunningly pretty wine with none of the sourness found in some of the other famous Saint-Emilions. It is willowy, slender, silky, and diaphanous, and yet beneath these demure characteristics, there is a beautifully fresh and steely battery of epic red fruit with delicious, lip-smacking acidity. I have noted a Pinot-esque character about some of the more alluring wines in this vintage, and Canon-La-Gaff is a prime contender for most seductive of all. Do not expect an old-style warrior. 43 CF 43 M 14 CS 13% Despite only 30% new oak, this has plenty of spices and even a hint of coffee accompanying the plum and hoisin fruit aromas. There is also a lovely chalky mineral quality (no doubt due to the high percentage of Cabernet Franc). In the mouth there is already a silky quality to the tannins and plenty of juicy fruit flavours. This is very fresh and not exuberant, but Canon la Gaffelière can afford to be a little less exuberant from time to time. The texture and length are what marks this out as a wonderful example of terroir winning out in this tricky vintage. One to watch for sure. Rating: 93 Rod Smith MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2025)
Château Canon La Gaffelière
Château Canon La Gaffelière started out life with two seperate names. It was known as Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière-Boitard in the 19th century. Skipping ahead to modern history, in 1969, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the Bordeaux wine estate in 1971. The von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Stephan von Neipperg manages the property as well as several other St. Emilion estates owned by the family. The Bordeaux wine property is located south of the St. Emilion village. It’s not far from La Gaffeliere. The terroir is sand and clay. The sandy topsoil adds more sand when you travel further from the slopes. The slope soil has a large concentration of clay. There is also a thick vein of clay in the subsoil, at a depth of between 70 and 150 cm.
